About this collection

“Official organ of St. Tomas medical faculty and UST Medical Association is the “Journal of Medicine”, a monthly publication of science papers written by medical men. The Journal dates from 1921, when the medical students of Santo Tomas together with the Pharmacy students published the magazine “Alma Mater”. This magazine, however was short-lived because in the same year, Very Fr. Acisclo Alfaguene, O.P., Rector of the University halted its publication as his administration decided to allow only one publication in the whole university, the “Unitas”, intended to be a joint publication of all the students and faculty members in all colleges and in that way promote their unity…

The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, however, did not put its own (publication) until 1940 when it finally came out with the Journal of Medi-cine, inspired by Rev. Fr. Jose Cuesta, O.P. who was then the Medicine Regent, and Dean Bonifacio Mencias. First editor-in-chief was Bonifacio Mencias.

The Pacific war suspended publication of the Journal but it came out again upon liberation, and has since then come out bimonthly. The publication was founded for the purpose of serving as the official medium in which articles, lectures and papers of medical men, especially St. Tomas own medical professors, may be published, Medical students find the Jour-nal of practical help to them in their class work as well as ward work.” (Pe, 1973).
