The ACTA MANILANA is a peer-reviewed journal published by the University of Santo Tomas for the Research center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.
It was first published on August 19 1965 with 2,000 copies distributed to schools and science organizations in and out of the country. Due to the boundless area of exploration originally laid by the statues of the research center, the early issues of the ACTA MANILANA did not have a specific theme to dwell on. But at the advent of the new orientation, restrictions on the topic published were done. Only contributions that typify the natural sciences were published.
Presently the ACTA MANILANA is regularly published as an annual publication of the Research Center for the Natural Sciences. It features work done in the Center and some guest articles of current interest. The journal is edited by the Director for the Center, who in turn, is assisted by the research staff who doubles as the editorial staff. The printed edition of the ACTA MANILANA is limited to 500 copies, most of which are meant as exchange with similar publication of other local and foreign institutions.
Some supplements of the ACTA MANILANA, have been considered as standard references in certain fields. The supplement on "Phytochemical, Microbiological and Pharmacological Screening of Medicinal Plants" which was published in 1985, has proven to be a useful guide to researchers in natural products. On February 2004, the revised version of the ACTA MANILANA supplement under a new title, "A Guidebook to Plant Screening: Phytochemical and Biological" was launched.
