This paper aims to trace the beginnings of the English language in the Philippines by following its subsequent growth and development. American English will be used as the background for the study of present English used in the Philippines. This paper provides possibilities for the study of Filipino English. In conclusion, the paper states that Filipino English will inevitably prevail and be accepted, thus proving that after a period of growth and development in the Philippines, English has changed from its original mother tongue of American English, and the change was brought about by environmental, cultural, psychological, social, and political factors. The paper also concludes that the present English spoken in the Philippines has deficiencies that need to be corrected and that English will continue to stay popular in terms of usage in the Philippines as a second language.
