This paper aims to discover and appraise the reading interests in Pilipino of high school students in Catholic schools to serve as one of the bases for a more effective selection of reading materials in the national language of the Philippines. The paper narrates that a student’s major interests give direction to his reading and the intensity of his interests provide the motive to read. Many factors contribute to the present status of reading interests as children tend to read what is readily available. This study is limited by the fact that it was conducted only to high school students of some Catholic schools. Data is gathered through questionnaires and the participants were first year to fourth year high school students. The study is further limited to the reading of magazines and pamphlets, because most of the reading material in the Pilipino language are not considered to be real books. The participants of this study were thirty students picked at random from each year from certain schools in the Philippines. The paper listed standards for appraising reading materials in Pilipino. In conclusion, the paper states that the participating students do not speak Pilipino, but read the magazines listed in the questionnaire, so it is possible that their literacy skill in Pilipino is limited to reading the language, while unable to speak it.
