Because of the brutality inherent in all wars, no one remembers the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines (1942-1945) with kindness. It was a war between Japan and the United States, which caught the Filipinos in the middle, as the Philippines, then a U.S. Commonwealth, was awaiting the scheduled recognition of its independence in 1946. The Japanese methodically sought to convince the Filipino people of the justness of their cause. They mobilized some Japanese groups to help the caus of the military occupation in the Philippines. Among the groups that the Japanese brought to bear on the Philippines was the "Religious Section" of the Japaneses Military Administation: Its "Catholic Unit" was composed of Japanese Catholic priests, seminarians and dedicated lay people. The highest-ranking Catholic in this unit was Osaka Bishop Paul Yoshigoro Taguchi, who would become, after the war, Japan's second Cardinal. This study collates the available information on the activities of the "Catholic Unit" of the Religious Section in the Japanese Propaganda Corps in 1942.
