This study aims to determine to what extent is the Chinese contribution directly or indirectly as the case may be in moulding in the various phases of the development of the present Filipino culture. The field of study covers from the earliest Chinese intercourse to the present time. It is divided into pre-Spanish from about the third century to the coming of Magellan, 1521; the Spanish, from 1521 to about the end of the 19th century; and the contemporary, from about the closing of the 19th century to the present time. The term culture may have various shades of meaning depending upon the field of study it is applied. In this study, the writer do not mean the same rigid meaning as found in sociology, although this may express it in all its essence. He used the prevailing application as used by some writers which is more or less synonimous, to enlightenment.
