This is a historical study of the Samals in the Mindanao Sea Region, from the prehistorical period to the 1900s. It is modest attempt to establish theories and beliefs on their origin, their early economic endeavors during the colonial period, their eventual diaspora from their homeland in 1848, and their migration and acculturation in many parts of the Philippine Archipelago. These processes were reinforced by the analysis of the epics , customs, and other folk traditions of the people. The study seeks to answer the following questions: 1)What are the theories and beliefs concerning the origin of the Samal people of Mindanao? 2)What were the significant events around Mindanao Sea region that contributed to the migration of the Samals? 3)What were the conditions that brought about the migration of the Samal people to various parts of Mindanao?. Though primarily of historical concerns, the study, as a whole is multidisciplinary using historical, anthropological and folklore research, methodologies, and materials. Archival research was intensively used, especially on those periods dealing with the Samals' early trading activities in the 9th century and their dispersion in 1848.
